Dr. Matheny’s Background:  International Roots  (add section on Ecuador)

1962-1965:  Lived with family in Chiengmai, Thailand.  Father was working as biologist with US foreign aid programs for malaria control.  "Teddy"  attended 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades at a small missionary school, "Chiengmai Children's Center"  Highlight:  in 1963, performed in a puppet show for the Royal Family and shook hands with the King of Thailand, had meal with Royal Family.  

1965-1968:  Lived with family in Bangkok, Thailand.  Attended International School of Bangkok.  Father continued work for malaria control programs, USAID.

1968-1970:  Lived with family in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  Attended American Community School of Addis Ababa, 8th and 9th grades.  Father continued work for malaria control programs, USAID.

1970 and thereafter, lived again in USA:  Hawaii, California, South Dakota, Santa Cruz (undergraduate), Los Angeles (medical school)

1978 Summer:  As pre-med student, spent one month in jungles of Ecuador with medical mission in Taisha, Morena-Santiago, serving the head-hunting Shuara Indians.
